the project.

Squiggle Faces is a project that I started to try and improve my digital illustration skills. There was no real goal, it was mainly to become familiar with Procreate and to explore colour and line to create fun portraits.

the process.

The process involved me choosing a reference image and a colour scheme. From this, I created a loose outline of key features and then layer on colours, textures, and highlights until I'm happy with the final result.

project takeaways.

Having spent the majority of my life as a visual artist who mainly created pieces with charcoals on paper, moving my medium to a digital posed quite the challenge. It wasn't as hands-on as I was used to and I had to get use to making my Apple Pencil do the things my fingertips usually would.

In addition, the style of drawing I chose to focus on - these loose line sketches - forced me to accept the beauty in imperfections. I was not creating realistic portraits as I was used to and had to instead adapt my prior techniques of blending and shading to show dimension in a different way.
